Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974 requires that individuals with a disability have access to free and appropriate education. The services provided by Section 504 are separate from the services provided by Special Education.

If you believe your child has a qualifying disability under Section 504, you may contact KCS's Elementary Principal or Secondary Director. As directed by law, the evaluation will determine if your child's disability substantially limits them in major life activities. Information that is commonly reviewed during the evaluation process includes the following:

  • Academic progress and grades
  • Teacher observations
  • Test scores
  • Medical and/or psychological diagnoses
  • Information provided by the parents or guardians

If the evaluation determines that the disability substantially limits a major life activity, a 504 Plan can be developed to outline what the student, parent/guardian, and the school can do to accommodate for the disability.
